Herb O’Brien first came up with the name of O’Brien skis in his basement of his family home on Lake Sammamish before moving the company to Redmond.
Herb then after founding HO water sports decided to start making wakeboards, so he started a company called Hyperlite.
He got the name Hyperlite because of the light weight materials he used to make his wake boards/skis, which was:
In 2006 Herb O'Brien left H.O. and Hyperlite to form a new watersports company named Square One with a new wake boarding brand, Ronix, which would compete with Hyperlite. These boards were the top of the range boards and were made for intermediate/expert wake boarders. Hyperlite wakeboards were cheap around the 300 mark and were made for beginner/intermediate wake boarders.

He got the name Hyperlite because of the light weight materials he used to make his wake boards/skis, which was:
- Sheets of wood glued together also known as ply wood, this is the main source to make the wakeboard float and make it as lightweight as possible.
- They then put the wood laminate on.
- Then came the metal laminate, again trying to stay as light weight as possible, they get a sheet of aluminum and it is then sandwiched by two bits of wood
- Lastly comes the finishing touch, the fiber glass laminate, the fiber glass touch gives it that final look to the board, they then put a wrap on the board to make it look good and ready for sales
